Who is an Auto Body Repair
Technician?
You love
working with your hands, and with equipment and tools, and you
truly love tinkering on cars. Straightening a car body is a
specialized skill; without it, an expensive auto can be
rendered worthless.
As the auto body technician, you are
looking at damaged vehicles and determining the best course of
action, you are informing customers what needs doing, and then
you are working to get that car back into shape. This job
requires a creative eye capable of effective problem solving,
and a keen attention to detail for things such as paint touch
ups, (if the colours don’t match, the car value decreases
astronomically.)
Objectives - Auto body Technician
(formerly auto body collision repair)
This 26 week course will give you insight
into all the various aspects of what it takes to get the
vehicle in near to new condition. It will teach you the
basics - about paint touch ups to the advanced skills like how
to assess and fix structural damage.
This certificate program is for individuals wishing to prepare for a
career in auto body collision repair. Gain the skills necessary to
demonstrate basic competency in welding, metalwork, plastics, surface
prep and painting.
Course Outline -
- Understanding automobile
construction
- Using auto body hand tools
- Body and paint shop procedures and
safety
- Mig welding
- Basic sheet metal straightening
- Sheet metal finishing using fillers
- Planning and execution of repairs
- Automotive plastics
- OEM finishing and refinishing
- Surface preparation
- Final Painting
Certificate -
Upon graduation you receive the Autobody Collision Repair Certificate
from the Automotive Training Centre.
Placement Assistance - Auto
body Technician
All
graduates receive full placement support from the Automotive
Training Centre.
The number of job openings is expected to exceed the number
of seekers especially as the number of retiring professionals
increases related to the number of skilled professionals
seeking work.
There are far fewer young skilled professionals entering
the work force compared to the number of professionals who
will retire over the next ten years. So it is anticipated that
there will be an ongoing increase in demand for professionals
coming into the work force.
Career Paths - A career in the auto industry is
especially timely as stats show an ‘above average’ industry
outlook for growth potential and employment demand.
Add to that the fact that salaries for professions across
the automotive industry rate equal to or better than similar
professions in other industries, but with significantly less
time required for training, apprenticeship, and on-the-job
experience.
You can consider yourself one of the most employable
people in the country. Earning rates for auto body
technicians average $29 000 to start and up to $48 000 within
the first five years.
As an experienced auto body technician, you could move into
a supervisory or management position at an auto body repair
shop, a paint representative for a paint supply company, a
sales representative for an automotive supply company, or an
insurance adjuster or retail auto sales.
